When switching off the engine ( 1.9 tdi ) I hear a noise like a dry bearing wirring for a few seconds. If I increase the revs to 1500 rpm before switching off then the noise is louder and lasts longer.. Could it be related to a wastegate problem? . There is no loss in overall power .. I might add that this has come about since having the Ford dealer replace the timing belt last week .. Do any vac pipes have to be removed when changing the timing belt? Any help much appreciated. KF

Have you tried it with your foot on the clutch. I'm wondering if it could be the clutch thrust bearing.

Of course if it's a auto please disregard.

If you put you vehicle details in your signature, people will have a better idea how to help.

Sorry. It is a manual 2001 1.9 tdi.

I just disconnected the hose on the engine side of the MAF and discovered the noise when switching off, comes out of the hose. So, it appears to be in the turbo area. Could a sticking wastegate be the problem?

There isn't a wastegate because you have a variable nozzle turbocharger and it's a diesel (no throttle valve). Personally, I would return it to the Dealer and complain since it only appeared after they worked on it.

Hi Manxman, just wondering if you have managed to sort it out - I've got similar noise coming from the turbo area and would love to know what's causing it.

isnt this the run on pump thingy majig?????

It sounds like the turbo is spinning down and you may have an air leak somewhere which is amplifying the noise. Check all the hose connections.

Does the "whirring" decrease in pitch when you turn the engine off? If so then you are looking at turbo bearings. If it doesn't then I would suggest the run on pump if yours has one. Check the hose connections as Sepulchrave suggests particularly the Intercooler to turbo hoses.

I too have a similar turbo related noise! I have noticed that I heard a slight "plop" sound just as the turbo was nearly stopped.....sounded like a valve closing, then the turbo noise abruptly stopped too. Has anyone had any success with a fix?
